Drogheda is the last town on the River Boyne before it enters the Irish Sea and boasts beautiful coastal views just outside the town. Drogheda has everything one might need during your stay, from a range of accommodation options to shopping, restaurants and a vibrant social scene in the evening hours. The performing arts are also a mainstay in the town as you’ll find theatre productions, live music and comedy gigs readily available in Drogheda. The town is home to a number of historic monuments including St. Peter's Church, St. Laurence's Gate, the Boyne Viaduct and many more.
The main allure of this part of Ireland is the historic Boyne Valley. Here you'll find historic sites that stretch back over 5000 years. This area is peppered with ancient meeting places, megalithic tombs, large castles, and a variety of religious sites.
The main attraction in the area is Newgrange, an incredibly well restored megalithic tomb that predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. This impressive structure awes all that visit due to its engineering feats such as the intricately designed sun box that illuminates the entire inner chambers of the tomb once a year at dawns light on the winter solstice.
The scale of the exterior is impressive, but its façade is admittedly subdued. One of Newgrange’s most amazing features is easy to overlook. The artisans that designed and built this passage tomb fit it out with a roofbox that allows a focused slice of light into the innermost chamber on the day of the winter solstice. On that day, this inner room – which is normally steeped in darkness – is bathed in sunlight for 17 minutes. It’s a marvellous site to behold.
Newgrange passage tomb has been standing for approximately five millennia, which means that it’s older the Stonehenge. It sunk into the ground and slipped from the public mind for around 1,000 years, until excavation began in the 1600s.
