Finding oneself in the seaport of Sligo means you’ve entered a land of ancient magic and wonder. The evidence of Ireland’s earliest civilisations and legendary prehistory is all around, woven into the staggering beauty of a county that became the inspiration for the Nobel Prize winning poet, W. B. Yeats.
The town itself has a colourful and busy nightlife, especially along the area known as the Riverside, and there are historic and musical festivals held often. The town and county have a long history with traditional Irish music, dating back nearly eight hundred years, that’s still very much alive today. Another large draw to the area is the surfing. It may not be warm, but locations like Strandhill and Enniscrone famous in the surfing community, along with the legendary waves to be found off Mullaghmore Head.
Mystical, Ancient Burial Sites
For proof that the land the town of Sligo is built on has been in use for thousands of years, you need only look to the vast number of prehistoric cairns and tombs that can be found within the city. The natural harbour has been in use for approximately seven millennia, while the town’s first roundabout was built around a megalithic passage tomb. This tomb is an outlier of the Carrowmore site, found on the Cúil Irra peninsula just three kilometres west of the town, an ancient graveyard complex of tombs, dolmens and stone circles among the oldest ever constructed. The earliest depositions appear to have been made around 3700 BC, some 700 years before Newgrange.
For those up for a 45-minute hike in the freshest of air, on the top of Knocknarea is the legendary burial site of Queen Medb, the mythical queen of Connacht thousands of years ago who was in nearly constant battle with her former husband, the king of Ulster. Although it’s never been excavated, Medb is said to be buried in the twelve-metre-high cairn, upright so she is always facing her enemies in Ulster. A small cottage, just off the R292, is the visitor centre for Carrowmore and the surrounding monuments, and offers an exhibition and guided tours around the tombs.
