Portlaoise Car Hire Location

The town of Portlaoise is a countryside outpost in Ireland, located in County Laois in the south-central region of the country. The town is located along the M7 motorway, approximately halfway between Dublin and Limerick – though it’s technically a few miles closer to Dublin. With that in mind, Portlaoise makes for satisfyingly weekend retreat from the capital. Visitors can explore the Slieve Bloom Mountains, cast a line in the River Barrow or even embark on a horse-drawn caravan tour of the back country.

Some visitors in Ireland arrange car hire in Dublin or Waterford and then travel on to Portlaoise from there. Others prefer to connect by public transportation, picking up a rental car in Portlaoise once they arrive.

The Portlaoise Car Rental's depot is located north-east of the town centre along R445 (also called Dublin Road). It’s part of the Downey’s Auto Stop. This location is especially convenient for those arriving from Dublin, as the depot is relatively close to the M7 motorway. Simply exit at the signpost indicating ‘Port Laoise’ and ‘R445’.

Given Portlaoise’s relatively central location in Ireland, drivers are never far from other key cities in the country. The following destinations are all easy to reach by hire car from Portlaoise:

Kildare (20 miles north-east of Portlaoise)

The Kildare town centre is charming and compact, laid out around a plaza fronting an attractive cathedral. Kildare is easy to reach. Simply follow the M7 north-east out of Portlaoise. It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the drive.

Dublin (52 miles north-east of Portlaoise)

Dublin needs no introduction. As Ireland’s leading city and capital, Dublin is rich in culture, entertainment and history. For many who visit Ireland, Dublin serves as the bookends of their journey. For those based in Portlaoise, exit the car hire depot and head north-east on R445 to drive to Dublin. The intersection with the M7 (also signposted as the E20) is nearby. This road eventually changes names to the N7 and connects all the way to Dublin.

Kilkenny (31 miles south of Portlaoise)

For visitors and tourists, Kilkenny delivers the Ireland that travellers imagine while planning their visit. It boasts a beautiful castle, medieval cathedral, colourful shop fronts, pubs that have been around for hundreds of years and a spectacular line-up of live trad music.

Limerick (70 miles south-west of Portlaoise)

Limerick is located along the river Shannon, and it was recently named an ‘Irish City of Culture’. It is, perhaps, most famous as the setting for the novel, Angela’s Ashes, by Frank McCourt. However, Limerick also features plenty of recently restored Georgian and medieval architecture.
