Visiting Kilkenny is never disappointing, the town is happy to appear exactly as visitors imagine Ireland to be, with narrow streets lined by ancient buildings and punctuated with old-time marketplaces as they follow the River Nore, between Saint Canice’s Cathedral and Kilkenny Castle. Historically constructed from locally sourced ‘Black’ marble and having grown rich in times past from exporting that same stone, there’s no doubt why Kilkenny is called ‘the marble city’.
What to do in KilkennyKilkenny Castle, built in the 13th century for the 4th Earl of Pembroke, is an imposing structure that has defended the City’s river crossing for centuries. Opposite is the National Craft Gallery, an exciting Ireland's leading centre for contemporary craft and design. At the other end of the town, 800-year-old Saint Canice’s Cathedral is the latest incarnation of a church that has occupied the same spot since the 6th century, and includes an ancient round tower that affords some stunning views over the city. The Black Abbey is a beautifully restored Dominican monastery built in 1225 that boasts the largest five-light window in the country. And, of course, as with any decent Irish city, there are dozens of bars, pubs and clubs to sample, and let the locals clue you in on the best sights to see.
What to do in County KilkennyBeyond the City, the castle, the cathedral, the Black Abbey, and the Medieval Mile, a whole county of delight awaits. Through the lands rolling hills and stone-lined roads, Kells Priory and the tower at Kilree offer an intriguing look back to the Ireland of a thousand years ago. For some adventures, maybe a little more in tune with nature, the beautiful Kilfane Waterfall and Glen, or see the magnificent rock formations in Dunmore Cave. But, for a real step back in time, from the farm at Jerpoint Park you can access the lost town of Newtown Jerpoint, a once thriving but now deserted 12th-century town that offers guided heritage tours.
